I do my best thinking after 10 pm

Always have. Ideas and epiphanies show up at night. The noise stops, the inbox stops, and I can actually think.

The problem: I work for a bank. We start early.

Nearly 30 years in US tech, I worked mostly on my own schedule. Startups, SRE, DevOps/platform teams — output mattered more than hours. It fit nicely.

Here in Manila, at the biggest bank in the country, I’m in standup an hour after arriving. Governance reviews. Stakeholder calls. Structure.

I’m not complaining. I chose this.

But I’ve had to build systems around my own wiring. Block creative work for early morning (second best for me). Protect evenings for thinking, not meetings. Document everything so my thoughts and ideas don’t disappear.

Tech leaders in banking — does the culture actually work for your brain, or are you engineering around it too?
